The Den is a mainstream autism base (MAB) which offers a flexible approach to the curriculum. It is a joint provision which supports pupils from both Meadows First School and Parkside Middle School. It is led by a specialist teacher and 6 teaching assistants who work closely with families to ensure that student’s feel safe and secure when they attend each day. Both schools view autism as a difference rather that a deficit and embrace the richness and diversity within classrooms. We understand that autism is experienced differently by each student, therefore, provision is tailored to meet student’s individual’s needs. The MAB staff work collaboratively with mainstream teachers to ensure a seamless transition between both provisions.

In addition to The National Curriculum, The Den offers a therapeutic curriculum which supports student’s social, emotional and communication needs. Sessions include; Lego Therapy, Drawing and Talking Therapy, Emotional Literacy (ELSA), Thrive, Speech and Language Therapy and autism curriculum lessons. Students are also given the opportunity to engage with the local community and attend a variety of trips.

Our aim is to prepare students to participate in mainstream education as much as possible. By Year 8, we hope that most students can spend the majority of their time in mainstream lessons so that they are ready to take on the next part of their educational journey.

Places at The Den will be offered following consultation with the Local Authority. Students accessing The Den will have an ASD diagnosis and an EHCP in place.
